How to Keep Your Computer Running Smoothly for Trading

By Larry Jacobs, Editor of Traders World magazine

Good airflow is very important to a computer. It keeps the computer’s temperature cool and the components running smoothly. A dirty computer will slow a computer down and will affect the speed of your charts, as well as your trade executions. Also, a dirty trading computer will eventually fail, and you don’t want that to happen, especially when you are day trading.

Case fans are the means of keeping the air flowing through the computer. Dirty fans impair the air circulation. Look at the dirty fan in this article. It was one of the three fans in a computer that caused a computer’s failure. You really need to clean your computer at least every 3 - 4 months with can air, which you can buy at any discount store such as Walmart, Target or Kmart.

The Sonata Trading Computer is the most popular trading computer available today. It has two front filters and three case fans. These are the items that always need to be kept clean. See the following Sonata Case diagram.

The CPU fan should also be kept clean. This is even more important than the case fans. The failure of this fan will kill your computer.

Another important factor to keep your computer running smoothly is to protect it from electrical surges. Electrical surges are what ruin the circuits on motherboards and causes them to fail. To protect your computer from this danger, you should have either UPS battery backup, such as the Cyberpower CP1500AVRLCD UPS, or the Cyberpower 880 surge suppressor.

Computers do, in many cases, fail due to unexpected reasons -- a virus or a software correction, for example. The Sonata Trading Computer uses software called PCAngel. This allows the user to restore the computer to factory settings, along with a backup folder of all programs and data. A computer can be restored within 10 minutes versus the normal 4 hours it takes to reinstall a computer’s operating system, drivers and programs.

Finally, some computers do fail for unexpected reasons. The hard disk drives, motherboard, video cards or CPU can fail. If your computer does not have any warranty on it from the manufacturer, you can get extended warranties from CWS. They provide 24 / 7 / 365 toll-free support for hardware and software, as well as next-business-day onsite service for repairs of your computer and, in some cases, same-day, onsite repair.

This saves you from having to take your computer into a local repair facility, waiting days and not knowing how much you will be charged for repairs or parts at $75+ per hour, plus the retail cost of parts to repair your system on site. With this service, you set the appointment time and don't have to wait for the technician to show up as you do with the cable man.
