What Do I Really Want in a Trading Computer?

By Larry Jacobs, Editor of Traders World magazine

First, I want one that is totally quiet! I don’t want to hear it at all. I need my concentration for trading. Plus, a whining computer gives me a headache. I know the best and quietest computer cases are the triple-layer ones. This is what I want. I don’t want any noisy fan video cards. If possible, I want heat pipe coolers on the motherboard, CPU and video cards to keep everything perfectly quiet.

Second, I want graphic cards to support crisp screens that don’t strain my eyes. I don’t want my eyes to tire. I want to be able to power up to 30-inch monitors if necessary. The computer needs to have DVI output as opposed to analog. DVI is much sharper and clearer.

Third, I want a powerful CPU for trading as many programs as I need to be successful. It should be dual or quad core.

Fourth, I want redundancy in power connections and the Internet. So, if my electric power goes out, I want a battery backup system, so I can continue to trade. If my cable goes down, I want my computer to automatically switch over to DSL. If the computer gets infected with a serious virus, I want the computer to be able to fix itself. I know some computers have PCAngel. This is what I want.  Also, I want dual Internet connections with the highest data flow possible. Finally, I want mirrored drives, so, if one goes down, the other one will take over.

Fifth, I want my computer to maintain itself and continually defrag itself, so I have full power all the time. I know this is called Diskeeper Pro. Also, I want the data to be backed up automatically.

Sixth, I want a two- or three-year upgrade program, so I am not stuck with an outdated computer. Remember, I am a trader, and I need excellent equipment to compete in the marketplace.

Seventh, I want my computer insured with onsite service. I want the computer to be guaranteed to work.

Eighth, I want a computer that is compatible with every trading platform.

Ninth, I want a wireless keyboard and a very responsive mouse.

Tenth, I want the computer to run efficiently and not use a lot of power.

Eleventh, I want a beautiful-looking computer with clean lines.

Twelfth, I want the computer to be designed from the ideas of many traders who have given sufficient feedback to make this happen.

Thirteenth, I want a turnkey computer. All my trading programs should be installed, so when I get the computer, all I need to do is connect the monitors and keyboard and turn it on, and it is ready to go.

Fourteenth, I want a computer that has the potential of powering up to 12 monitors, if I need them.

Fifteenth, I want the computer built with the latest and highest quality component parts possible. I also want it built by an expert technician.

Sixteenth, I have heard of these new perpendicular drives that are quiet, very fast and the most reliable on the market. I want it built with these.

Seventeenth, I want a computer that is so reliable and quiet that I can just leave it on forever.

There is only one computer that can do all of this: The Sonata Trading Computer.
